A female cat cannot be compared to a female dog. Just like a tom cannot be compared to a male dog. The first ones are loners while a dog raises its puppieswith the pack. A queen does this by herself. Not only does she provide daily for her kittens, but she also passes down all her knowledge in socialising and hunting. Her experience with humans, litter-boxes, vacuum-cleaners etc. She does this with utmost skill, distinct self-will and resourcefulness. Sterilisation does not change this. The task of a tom is to breed kittens in his territory. This is his only interest, if he is not neutered. Castration changes his way of life. Other things become more important like TLC, playing and his human. Often toms meet for tom meetings, which also happens in households where there are several neuters. Already in their first weeks of life, one can see that female kittens are the better hunters. While at that time they prefer to watch and wait, some of them are already real personalities when 3-4 months of age.
Whether your first cat is male or female does not matter. But it is advisable that the second cat will be from the opposite sex. By the way it is always a female who has the say. Nothing wrong with taking two males, too but two ladies might mean trouble in the long run, as only one of them will rule.
Neutering is a must. An unneutered male is a loner and aggressive. The siring only takes seconds and ends with the queen turning around and soundly smacking the male. The life of an unneutered male is not as wonderful, as some people imagine.
An unneutered female will soon get an uterine infection, and giving her the pill will make her aggressive as well.
Whether the animals will like each other depends mainly on the future owner. If he prefers the newcomer trouble cannot be prevented. A 18 year-old female may take to the new kitten just like two senior males accept a male kitten. But the fact remains that a tom is the softer of the two. A lady can also be a cuddler but with a portion of self-will. Of course, each animal has its very own characteristic, and no other breed beats the orientals.
